The 5th HOBY Korea International Young Scholars Conference 2025
AI Transformation (AX) 시대, 단순한 지식 습득을 넘어서 A.I 가 대체하기 어려운 역량을 가진 인재가 더욱 주목받게 되었습니다. 이러한 흐름 속에서, 청소년 연구 활동은 단순한 학업 성취도를 넘어 창의성, 비판적 사고력, 자기주도 학습 능력 등 미래 사회에서 요구되는 핵심 역량을 종합적으로 평가할 수 있는 중요한 지표로 인식되고 있습니다.
이는 호비 재단 (HOBY Foundation)의 설립자 휴 오브라이언이 강조한 “무엇을 생각할 것인가가 아니라, 어떻게 생각할 것인가(How to think, not what to think)”라는 교육 철학과도 맥락을 같이하고 있기도 합니다.
또한, AI의 활용이 가능해지면서 학생의 실제 역량과 연구 활동의 신뢰성을 직접 검증할 수 있는 면접(인터뷰)의 중요성이 더욱 커지고 있습니다. 이러한 시대적 변화에 발맞춰, 올해 제5회 HOBY Korea 청소년 학술대회는 운영 방식을 새롭게 개편하여 진행됩니다.

내용 :
HOBY라는 국제적 명성, 그리고 7년간 검증된 HOBY Korea의 청소년 연구 프로그램과 역량 평가 노하우가 집약된 본 트랙을 통해 미국 대학이 신뢰하는 자신의 연구 역량을 입증할 수 있습니다.
SOCIAL SCIENCES: 데이터 분석은 단순한 수치 계산을 넘어, 데이터가 담고 있는 의미를 정확하게 이해하는 것에서 출발합니다. 학생들이 연구 과정에서 흔히 겪는 어려움 중 하나는 데이터 자체에 대한 충분한 이해 없이 분석을 시작하는 것입니다. 데이터 저장소(repository)의 문서(documentation)나 코드북(codebook)을 꼼꼼히 확인하는 과정 없이 데이터를 다운로드하거나, 변수의 의미를 잘못 파악하여 분석에 오류가 생기는 경우가 종종 발생합니다. Social Sciences (시화과학, 인문) 분야를 선택하여 참여하는 학생들은 이러한 문제를 해결하고, 학생들이 실질적인 연구 핵심 역량을 키울 수 있도록 데이터 탐색 훈련을 진행합니다.
STEM: STEM 트랙에서는 참가자들이 ChatGPT와 같은 최신 AI 도구를 활용해 특정 데이터셋을 분석하는 방법을 배웁니다. 단순한 명령어 입력을 넘어, AI가 제시한 분석 결과를 해석·검증하고 이를 연구 목표에 맞게 적용하는 실습을 진행합니다. 최근 이공계 대학, 특히 아이비리그를 포함한 세계 유수 대학의 이공계통 교수진들은 AI 활용을 장려하며, 연구와 학습 과정에 AI를 결합하는 능력을 중요한 역량으로 평가하고 있습니다. 본 트랙은 이러한 변화에 발맞춰, 참가자들이 AI 시대에 필요한 데이터 분석 실무와 비판적 사고력을 함께 함양할 수 있도록 설계되었습니다.

PPT (Papers or Proposals Presentation Track)
Middle and high school students present their own research papers or research proposals in English at the conference and receive feedback from a professor.
- An advanced level of English proficiency is required.
- Outstanding participants receive awards by the session professor.
- 53 papers or research proposals were selected in 2023.
PPT Track has two sub-tracks: FOCUS and GENERAL
■ FOCUS: Students are required to submit their research papers or research proposals in specific areas of research.
- Live Sessions with Professor:
Associate Professor of Sociology at Harvard will conduct live sessions.
- Sociology: Gender and family, political and historical sociology, comparative sociology and social change, or topics related to sociology
Associate Professor of Radiology at UPENN will conduct live sessions.
- Physics, Computational Research: Quantum optics, bio-optics, physical and mathematical sciences, image analysis, nonlinear inverse scattering problem, tomography, optics, plasmonics, electromagnetic theory, optical microscopy, nanostructured materials, or topics related to physics or computational research
- Mock Peer Review: Mock Peer Review provides participants with an opportunity to understand how research and papers are validated in actual academia or scholarly journals through experiential learning.
- Mock Debate: Participants simulate a scholarly debate by utilizing topics derived from current issues in academia or recent research trends.
■ GENERAL: Students submit their research papers or research proposals in any field of studies.
RMT (Research Mentoring Track)
For upper elementary, middle and high school students who are new to research paper writing and want to learn about it.
Participants can choose either a STEM workshop session or a social sciences workshop session, where mentoring is provided by a Ph.D. candidate or someone with a Master's degree or above.

■ Lectures from Current Professors at Ive League Universities, MIT, and Stanford: This program features lectures by prominent professors from top universities like MIT, Cornell, Stanford, and UPENN. These lectures will likely cover cutting-edge research and thought leadership in various fields. (Open to all participants)
■ 4 Presentation Sessions: Participants showcase their research shaping the future across various fields, offering a platform for scholars to share their findings and ideas. This program focuses on research paper presentations. (Open to Paper Presentation Track Participants)
■ Data Analysis and Visualization Sessions: These sessions are designed to help teenagers develop research skills. It will cover how to transition from forming opinions to using data analysis and visualization techniques to find evidence to support their claims. It focuses on transitioning from subjective opinions to evidence-based analysis through data analysis and visualization techniques, empowering young researchers to make informed decisions and communicate their findings effectively. (Open to Paper Presentation Track Participants)
■ Research Mentoring Workshops: These workshops equip participants with the skills and tools needed to transform their inquiries into well-structured research proposals, fostering a culture of inquiry and academic excellence. The workshops will cover steps like developing a research question, conducting research, and crafting a research proposal. (Open to Research Mentoring Track Participants)
■ Free Speech Sessions: Participants deliver presentations on various forms of research across all fields. (Open to Open Track Participants)
